Parkour

h1 August 15th, 2006

The latest thing to capture my imagination is Parkour. From what I can make out, it is a form of ‘free running’ that originated in France (although I’m not even 100% about that).

What I am sure about is just how much Parkour ROCKS! Check this out now! Otherwise, just go to Youtube and do a search on Parkour. There are plenty of video’s there.

I so need to get fit again. This actually reminds me of the running I did as a kid growing up in north Queensland, but instead of urban scapes it was riverbeds with huge boulders. Okay, less gymnastics too.

[Update] I just found this Parkour tutorial page. Sweet.

  1. I don’t have the link handy, but there is a group in Brisbane that do ‘runs’ every couple of weeks.

  2. ….minus the gymnastics? That is all it was?…I played on the monkey bars when I was a kid,and slid through fences…okay so my body wasn’t as cut…….
Its a thing that ppl get together and do?
    Hm.

  3. Ben - if you find the link let me know (unless you’ve already emailed it to me; still catching up on email after a busy weekend).

Abbey - it seems to be something that is often done in small groups, but I’m working a bit on guesswork here. I have one of the guys here at work keen to have a go at it with me!

  4. Hello. I realize this is severla months after you’ve posted, but I figure I can educate you a little. Freerunning was developed after Parkour; Parkour came first. Traceurs and freerunners both are all over the world… We don’t necessarily do it in “small groups.” Every year in Toronto, there is a jam (meet) that generally has over 90 people in attendance. Training might be a little different, since it’s better in smaller groups, but we do often have larger groups, as well.

I don’t know where you live… But check out:

There’re tons of local sites that you can visit… I can almost guarantee that there’s a site that’s local to you. Happy training.

  5. Thanks Andy - I’ll be sure to check out those sites later at home. I live in Brisbane, Australia, and you’re right - there is a group here too!
